In marrying into the family, Debo imbued Chatsworth with spirit, elegance, style and a sense of welcome that transformed the worn-out house that had suffered under decades of taxation, war and social change into one of the most popular and historic houses. She met Hitler and Churchill and was a close confidante of the Prince of Wales, President Kennedy, Evelyn Waugh, Oscar de la Renta, John Betjeman, Lucian Freud, Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett.
