Royal Birmingham Society of Artists

Tuesday 14 January 2020

10.30am to 12.30pm

The RBSA was established in 1821 but can trace its origins back to the earlier life drawing academy established by  Samuel Lines, Moses Haughton and Vincent & Charles Barber.  By 1829 a gallery and offices behind a grand classical portico was being built and the Society received its Royal Charter in 1868.  It became highly influential in the later Victorian period, particularly with the Pre-raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements. Presidents from this period include, Burne-Jones, Morris, Millais and Leighton.  From its foundation one of the principal aims of the Society has been educational and although this became less central when the Birmingham School of Art was founded in 1843 it is still an important part of its activities.

Financial pressures in the early 20th century caused the Society to sell its grand New Street building for redevelopment and more recently it relocated to its present premises near St Paul’s Square. In 2014 the RBSA celebrated the centenary of its first exhibition, and at that time it did a lot of work on its archives.  Brendan, the Societies Professor of Art History, will fill out the History of the Society and talk about some of the Artist members using examples of artwork and archive items to illustrate his talk, rather than a projector and slides.

As added interest we visit during one of the RBSA,s selling exhibitions so we will be able to view some of the art produced by today’s members.

The gallery opens at 10.30am  so if you arrive early gather outside the Brook Street entrance to the Ground floor gallery. Our visit is expected to finish by 12.30pm.

Cost:  £9.50 for TASBE members and and  £11.50 for Non-Members.
