Thursday 12th September 2019
10.15am for 10.30am
The first event in TASBE’s 2019/2020 program is a guided tour of the only museum in the UK dedicated to carpets and carpet making. Kidderminster was internationally renowned for the quality of its carpet weaving, and this museum, based in an important industrial heritage site, celebrates the industry. The Museum received a boost with lottery funding in 2012 and now houses a variety of looms, objects archives books and photographs relating to the carpet making industry, from the 18th century to the present day.
There is a collection of around 3000 carpet designs in the archives, including some designs by well known names such as Charles Voysey, and we will be able to look at designs, carpet fashions, carpet manufacturing and materials., Hand and power loom weaving demonstrations will be part of our tour.
Also to see is ‘Breaking the Boundaries’, an exhibition of contemporary and traditional woven forms, by weaving artist Jan Bowman.
We meet at 10.15am for 10.30am. The visit includes tea and coffee and will finish by about 1.00pm. We hope to find somewhere good to have lunch afterwards.
As the event is ‘out of town’ we hope to offer car shares to those who would like a lift.
Cost: £8.50 for TASBE members £11.00 for non members.
