The Silver Factory
We are sorry that this event has been cancelled
Wednesday 8 April 2020
Two Sessions 10 people at each: 10.45am & 1.15pm
If you are interested in Birmingham’s industrial heritage this is the visit for you. The J.W. Evans Silver factory is very special remnant of the amazing diversity of highly skilled trades that made Birmingham the industrial city that it is.
Established in 1881 J.W. Evans is the most complete surviving historic factory in the Jewellery Quarter. When it closed in 2008 nothing was moved. All the original machinery: dies for stamping out the silverware shapes, the working equipment and all the business records, were left as if just for carrying on the next day.
The visit should give us a real understanding of the processes involved in making the silver plate table ware that was a staple of the areas production. This is such a unique time capsule that only 10 people are allowed in for each session.
