Walking Tour of Letterboxes of the Jewellery Quarter

Tuesday 4th June 2019

6.00pm

Ingenuity has been a hallmark of Birmingham’s powerhouse of industry since before Bolton and Watt and the Lunar Society.  The Jewellery Quarter was at the heart of this innovative enterprise.  A need was identified by the various manufacturers and craftspeople for securely receiving valuable packages delivered by hand or by post.

The special letterboxes that  were devised were the answer, and those that remain are a unique reminder of the frenetic activity that occurred during the height of the Quarter’s production.  This quirky walking tour, of the remaining special letterboxes, also looks at some of the businesses in the associated buildings and actual examples of some of the things that they produced.

We meet outside the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Vise Street for a 6.00pm start. The walk takes 1½ – 2 hours. For refreshments afterwards the nearby ‘The 1000 Trades’ on Vise Street or The Pig and Tail on Dayus Square are both good.

Cost £10 for members and £12.50 for non members.
